Jahnavi Patnala: Charting New Territory Through Data

When Jahnavi Patnala arrived at UNC Charlotte in August 2023 to begin her Master’s in Data Science and Business Analytics, it marked not only the start of a new academic chapter but also her first experience living away from home. What followed, she describes in three words: transformative, grounding, empowering.
“I chose UNC Charlotte because of the DSBA program—it really drew my attention,” she shared. “Data fascinated me because of the insights it can offer if handled correctly. My work experience before grad school made me realize how powerful data can be when used right.”
Throughout her time at UNC Charlotte, Jahnavi Patnala leaned into that curiosity and passion. She served as an Instructional Assistant (IA) for two semesters, supported faculty and peers, and gained hands-on experience through an internship at Trilio, where she worked as an AI Intern. “I loved the work I did using Generative AI and the Agentic approach. It was rewarding to apply what I’ve learned in real time.”
Among the faculty who impacted her journey, one name stands out: Dr. Chandrashekar Subramanium. “I just love how he plans his lectures and transitions between topics. He’s incredibly helpful and always approachable,” she said.
Her favorite place on campus? The Student Union. “It’s where I go to recharge and feel connected. I love soaking in the lively vibes and watching the campus come alive.”
While there were challenges in adapting to a new environment, Jahnavi Patnala says the experience helped her discover a new depth of resilience and adaptability. “I’ve grown in ways I never imagined,” she reflected. “My family’s unwavering support reminded me that love knows no distance, whether it’s a few miles or thousands.”
During tough times, she found comfort in simple joys like cooking and reading—activities that grounded her and offered space for creativity and calm.
As she prepared to graduate this spring (May 2025) and step into the professional world, she reflected on the road ahead with excitement. “What excites me most is getting the opportunity to apply everything I’ve learned in real time,” she said. She’ll be actively looking for roles where she can continue exploring the intersection of data, innovation, and real-world impact.
Looking back on her journey, she offers a heartfelt message to her younger self:
“Hey, little one. The world is a lot more than the people around you right now—bigger, brighter, and full of endless possibilities… You’re stronger than you know. You’re going to be you. And that’s more than enough.”
UNC Charlotte, she says, didn’t just offer her an education—it gave her a space to grow, connect, and believe in herself. And while her time as a student comes to an end, her story in data science is only just beginning.
