Mugilan Thiyagarajan: Turning Trials Into Triumphs

Categories: General News

Starting his graduate journey in a new country with just $700 in his pocket, Mugilan Thiyagarajan knew the road ahead would not be easy. But through resilience, hard work, and the support of his family, he transformed challenges into achievements—culminating in his graduation this past August with a Master’s in Data Science and Business Analytics from UNC Charlotte’s School of Data Science.

Before pursuing his degree, Mugilan worked as a Data Analyst, where he discovered his curiosity for artificial intelligence and machine learning. Wanting to go beyond analyzing past data, he was eager to explore how advanced techniques could drive smarter business decisions. That passion ultimately brought him to UNC Charlotte.

“I chose UNC Charlotte because of its well-structured curriculum, strong academic reputation, and the safe, supportive environment it offers international students,” he explained. The university’s faculty also played a major role in his decision. Among them, Professor Rick Chakra stood out. “He took my interest in data science to another level. His teaching helped me see that data science is not just about numbers or coding, but about uncovering patterns, asking the right questions, and using data to create real impact.”

During his time on campus, Mugilan balanced coursework with a research assistant role, an internship, and part-time jobs. Along the way, he discovered strengths he didn’t know he had. “Before coming to UNC Charlotte, I didn’t know I had the ability to adapt and thrive in a completely new country,” he said. “This journey taught me that I’m more than just a survivor.”

Graduating in August 2025, Mugilan immediately stepped into a full-time role as a Data Scientist at Camping World, where he now leverages AI and machine learning to help the business make smarter decisions. “Every project teaches me something new,” he shared. “It’s rewarding to see how data-driven solutions can create real impact.”

For Mugilan, the excitement of the future lies in the fast-changing world of technology. “AI and machine learning are constantly evolving and shaping the future. I know there’s always more to learn, and that motivates me.”

Behind every milestone, Mugilan carried with him the memory of his late father, who passed away during his undergraduate years, and the support of his mother and sister back home in India. “Leaving them behind was the toughest decision of my life, but their encouragement gave me the strength to keep going.”

Reflecting on his journey, Mugilan’s advice to new students is grounded in his own experience: “Don’t be afraid of challenges. They will shape you into a stronger version of yourself. Stay resilient, work hard, and believe in the value of every step you take.”

Mugilan Thiyagarajan’s story is one of perseverance, adaptation, and growth—a powerful reminder of how determination and support can transform struggles into success.
