Internship Course Information

Capstone Project/Internship Courses: Class Registration

Registration for the Internship course is different from any of your previous classes in that you need an approved proposal prior to receiving authorization.  Students are expected to research and secure an appropriate project.  Once they have an offer in hand, they will need to identify a mentor and develop a project proposal.

DSBA 6400: Internship Project (3) Prerequisite: Enrollment in MS in Data Science and Business Analytics. Complete an individual or team-based project that is originated from a related organization and approved by the department. (Fall, Spring, or Summer)

Internship Requirements

Before entering into an internship for credit, students must have completed a minimum of 21 hours of graduate coursework in the Data Science and Business Analytics program.  Successful projects must have a documented minimum of 160 contact hours.

Students who are planning to take the Internship Project and are searching for additional information should refer to the following Zoom recording of the Summer Internship Panel Seminar from September 19, 2022.

Proposal

Students who have secured an internship placement must first fill out the Internship Proposal and Mentor Contact Form. Submitted proposals will be reviewed weekly by the Faculty Directors. Students will be contacted if additional information is needed. The Director of Student Services will issue an authorization to register for DSBA 6400 if and when the proposal is approved.

Detailed information can be found in the course syllabus. Students are responsible for setting up a schedule for regular communication with the faculty director.  Once registered, all submissions will be through the course Canvas site.  All documents must be submitted and uploaded as PDFs to the Canvas site. Upon completion of the internship, the student is responsible for a report and a final presentation, open to all members of the program to attend.

Placement sites may require certain documentation and training before students are placed.  Some of the agencies may process this paperwork in-house and some may require that potential interns collect this information and have it ready to present prior to placement.  For your convenience, we have compiled a list of links for some of the common requests.  There are fees associated with several of these tests and background checks. Fees are the responsibility of the individual student. Please check with your preceptor about the procedures and requirements for their agency. Please note that you are responsible for keeping these results to prove your compliance with the agency's policies. The program will not keep any reports or records related to these tests.

Please fill out the Internship Proposal below. Choose the semester in which you are planning to take the internship.
